How does Breast Cancer happen?

Cancer is a disease caused by an abnormal growth of cells, which can invade or spread to other parts of the body. There are more than 100 types of cancer, including breast cancer. Breast cancer occurs when there is an uncontrolled growth of breast cells. Most breast cancers begin in the ducts that carry milk to the nipple (invasive ductal carcinoma). Breast cancer can also begin in the glands that make breast milk (invasive lobular carcinoma).

When a person is healthy, their immune system fights against any growths or DNA that are aberrant. This does not occur in cases of cancer. As a result, breast tissue cells start to grow uncontrolled and do not normally perish. This uncontrolled cell development develops into a tumour that starves the nearby cells of nutrition and energy. The inner lining of the milk ducts or the lobules that feed them with milk is where breast cancer typically develops. It may then spread to different bodily regions from there.

Risk factors

  1. Age- The likelihood of acquiring breast cancer in the following ten years at age 20 is 0.06%. At age 70, this percentage rises to 3.84%.
  2. Genetics-A person’s likelihood of getting breast cancer increases if a close relative does or has had the disease.
  3. Body weight- Because estrogen levels may be higher in obese women after menopause, obesity may raise the risk of breast cancer.
  4. Alcohol consumption-High alcohol consumption regularly could contribute to breast cancer development.
  5. Radiation exposure- The chance of developing breast cancer later in life may rise if you receive radiation therapy for another kind of cancer.

If a woman does not have a personal history of breast cancer, a significant family history of breast cancer, or a genetic mutation known to increase the risk of breast cancer (such as in the BRCA gene), and has not undergone chest radiation therapy before the age of 30, she is deemed to be at average risk for screening purposes.

For those at risk, mammograms can be used to begin screening for women between the

ages of 40 and 44. Mammograms should be performed annually on women 45 to 54. Women 55 and older have the option of switching to a mammogram every other year or staying with annual exams.

4. Hormone therapy
