BLOG – THE APPENDIX

The appendix is a small finger-shaped organ that juts out from the colon. For years, scientists and doctors have pondered the exact function of the appendix. It is only recently that scientists have discovered that the appendix helps your gut recover after an attack from a gastrointestinal disease. The appendix has a tissue that helps carry white blood cells that are essential while fighting off infections. Additionally, the appendix also ensures the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, which plays an important role in digestion and immunity.

We’ve all heard of people having their appendix removed, but have you ever wondered why? What role does the appendix play? How does it help in the functioning of our body

When you feel a sudden, sharp pain in your lower abdomen or at your belly button, it is likely that your physician  might need to check  the condition of your appendix .

Most likely, you may develop appendicitis if your appendix is blocked and can become inflamed. The worst-case scenario is that you will be advised to remove it surgically. People between the ages of 10 and 30 are more likely to get appendicitis, but having said this, just about anyone can develop appendicitis. The only saving grace is the fact that one can live without the appendix.

Appendicitis symptoms may last between 36 to 72 hours before the appendix ruptures. Appendicitis symptoms develop quickly from the onset of the condition. Early symptoms include:

  • Pain on the right side of the lower abdomen
  • Acute pain in the navel
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fever
  • Flatulence
  • Abdominal Bloating
  • loss of appetite

According to experts, the site of your pain may vary according to your age and the position of your appendix. While it is not advisable to ignore the symptoms and signs of appendicitis, make an appointment to see a doctor when you experience severe abdominal pain. Additionally, it is essential that you avoid eating, drinking, and using any pain remedies, antacids, or heating pads.

When your appendix gets inflamed, this creates the perfect conditions for bacteria to rapidly multiply. If it is not treated at the earliest possible time, your appendix can rupture. Although this can be fatal, timely intervention with immediate surgery to remove and clean your abdomen will help you make a speedy recovery. In other cases, a pocket of pus may form that can develop into an infection. Surgically, the pus will be removed and the appendix will be taken out; thereafter, you will be put on antibiotics.

Appendicitis, like any other disease, can be avoided by making lifestyle changes and incorporating some healthy choices and habits into your daily routine. Foods rich in fibre like beans, whole grains, apples, potatoes, and nuts are highly recommended. It is important that you also avoid processed foods, alcohol, and red meat (which has a high-fat content and are difficult to digest) as well as sugar in your diet.

To conclude, your appendix may be something minute that handles a minimum function in the body; however, it is important to look for symptoms and signs to ensure a healthy and well-functioning appendix to avoid the complications of appendicitis.
